The Impacts of Boko-Haram Insurgency: An Assessment of International Protection for Vulnerable Women and Girls in Madagali, Adamawa State, 2012-2019

Abstract

This study attempts a historical analysis and assessment of the international protection for vulnerable Women and girls affected by Boko-Haram insurgency in Madagali Community, Adamawa State. The study covers the period of the peak of the nefarious activities of the sects 2012-2019 in Madagali which later spread to other parts of Adamawa. The paper argues that the most vulnerable group in the society, women and girls, bears the brunt of the insurgency. In situation where conflicts prevail, women bear the burden of the problems arising from such event. As evidences proved, the activities of the deadly Boko-Haram insurgency on women and girls in Madagali remains untold story which are diverse and dynamic in nature. Amongst other issues, the impact is mostly felt in losses in agricultural activities which remain the major source of income in which other economic activities revolve around in the society. Rape and other gender based violence on the girl-child by the insurgents and security
forces on the other hand is believed to be a silent phenomenon. Both Primary and secondary sources were used to generate data, thus, qualitative research method has been adopted in rendering the facts. The findings from the study indicate that the atrocities of Boko-Haram activities have severe implications and consequences on the economy and sociocultural lives of women and girls in Madagali community, where the activities of the sect are more pronounced in Adamawa State. This work hopes to fill a historical gap to remedy the virtual neglect of insurgency activities and international intervention in Madagali by scholars.
