The Use of Language in Conflict Resolution: A Case Study of Nupe Language

Abstract

Language serves as both a reflection of individual identity and cultural heritage, as well as a catalyst for social transformation. This study explores the intrinsic connection between language and conflict resolution, recognising that while conflict has existed throughout human history, language has equally been present as a fundamental tool for mediation. The paper critically analyses various stages of conflict resolution and investigates how language facilitates reconciliation processes. Employing a sample survey methodology, this research collects field data to examine the linguistic strategies—including specific words, phrases, and sentence structures—used in everyday conflict resolution. Findings reveal that language plays a pivotal role in either escalating or de-escalating tensions between individuals and communities. While inflammatory, arrogant, or demeaning language exacerbates conflicts, the study emphasises the importance of adopting wise, meaningful, and constructive communication that fosters mutual understanding. Ultimately, the research advocates for conscious language use that promotes peace, preserves dignity, and contributes to sustainable development.
