APPRAISAL OF THE CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF POLITICAL VIOLENCE ON NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: 2007–2014.

Abstract

national development in Nigeria from 2007-2014. Political violence has been argued to
affects National development owing to its accompanying destruction of lives and properties
as was the case during the 2007 stretching to 2014 election period. The group conflict theory
was adopted for the study. The study has its methodology rooted in the secondary source of
data collection which has to do with the use of textbooks, journals, internet materials, etc.
findings from the study shows that political violence has brought a lot of conflicts in Nigeria
among ethnics groups, religions and tribes, the occurrence of conflicts in any society could be
more violent leading to cruel destruction of lives and property which hinders sustainable
national development. The paper suggested among others that; Ethical re-orientation of
persons and institutions, Viable and efficient Anti-corruption institutions, Addressing
Unemployment problems, Poverty and illiteracy, campaigns focused on the
implementation of the critical national economic, political, social, cultural, educational, and
health services, are way of curbing political violence in Nigeria.
