THE POLICY ON CORRECTIONAL SERVICE AND THE REFORMATIVE AGENDA IN NIGERIA: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE INSTITUTIONON

Abstract

The paper is aims to explore policy on correctional service and the reformative Agenda in

Nigeria with focus on the impact felt by Nigerians in the new wave of the policy introduction.

This paper used documentary methodology to arrived at it analysis. The article found that the

new name came into being under an act of 2019. Secondary sources of data collection were

used. From the work it was realized that the policy act, 2019 has four major objectives which

the Nigerian Correctional Service want to achieve in line with the world standard in the ways

of handling inmates. The theory of rehabilitation was used. The tool of analysis was purely

content analysis and logical inference. From the findings is that the institution is still facing

various degree of challenges. However, this paper came out with a number of

recommendations among which are Government should properly fund the prison system in

the country, government should provide adequate welfare for staff of the Nigerian Prison

Service, and the skill acquisition programmes in Nigerian prisons should be reorganized and

developed to ensure that all prisoners acquire one or more skill among others.
