Democracy is the most acceptable form of government in the world as it gives preferences
to popular participation, rule of law, periodic election and good governance. The paper
adopts the pluralist democratic theory as its theoretical framework. It uses secondary
method of data collection, which involves documentary evidences like textbooks,
Newspapers, magazines, and internet materials to generate information relevant to the
study. The study reveals that Nigerian democracy is confronted with the challenges of poor
political culture, corruption, insecurity, dependent electoral body, and primordial nature of
the nation's politics and democratic practices. Therefore, the paper recommends for a
reform in the nations' electoral and political process to ensure effective citizenship
participation and good governance in Nigeria.
