COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMME (ODL) OF UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN AND LONG VACATION TRAINING PROGRAMME (LVTP) OF IBRAHIM BADAMASI BABANGIDA UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The reality of inadequate space to accommodate prospective candidates into the regular

programmes of Nigerian Universities has opened doors for interesting candidates who are

now subscribing to the Open Distance Learning (ODL) mode of educational delivery, thus

Distance Education has come to stay in Nigeria as an alternative route to equal access to

educational opportunities especially at higher institution level. Records have shown that the

University of Ibadan (UI) has produced more than 5000 ODL students who have attained

various position of authority in Nigeria in her 30 years of DL existence and currently

expanding scopes through more courses. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBBU) started her

Long Vacation Training Programme (LVTP) in 2018 with 166 students. University of

Ibadan ODL has gone far and is making remarkable feat in the development of ODL in

Nigeria, hence, learning from the past of the UIODL by any institution that want to embark

in such feat is a right step in the right direction, Afterall, the fact remains that experience is

the best teacher. This paper using comparative analysis therefore critically examined

various components of ODL at University of Ibadan and IBB University, draws out

conclusions from comparison and made useful suggestions for the growth of ODL/LVTP in

the two institutions.
