NIGERIA'S DEFENCE, FOREIGN POLICIES AND HEGEMONIC ROLES IN WEST AFRICA

Abstract

This paper examined the Nigeria's defence role, foreign policies and hegemonic roles in west African crisis Using ECOWAS and ECOMOG as a regional body for West African defence .West African Countries had long being struggling to reassert their independence and pave way for accelerated economic growth, putting the deprivations of the colonial era behind through the promotion of cooperation and integration in the continent, mobilization of self –reliance policies and sustaining development strategies in order to cope with the problem of insecurity ,which arises from different crises, that is affecting West African State. This paper attempted an evaluation of Nigeria's Defence, Foreign policies and hegemonic roles in West Africa. Territorial Defence has been an outstanding challenges of West African States before and after the formation of the ECOWAS and ECOMOG as a regional body for the West African defence.
