Geography of Corruption in Nigeria's Democratic Institutions and its Implications for Socio-Economic Development

Abstract

This study examines the geography of corruption in Nigeria's democratic institutions and its implications for socio-economic development with particular reference to the three arms of the government. The study utilizes documentary research method where the data used for analysis in the piece were collected from government's documents and relevant literature. It reveals that the level of corruption in Nigeria over the years has had negative impacts on the socio-economic and political development of the nation. The study argues that there can never be development in a society where there is high level of corruption owing to the fact that development is only achievable in a society devoid of corruption where there is good governance through responsible leadership. It concludes that the rampancy of corruption in Nigeria signposts failure of good governance, lack of transparency and accountability. It recommends among others that Nigerian government should as a matter of serious concern attack corruption in all ramifications to see that it has no base in Nigeria, adding that if Nigeria fails or refuses to combat corruption, the image of the country will continue to remain dented and will consequently emerge as a quasi-state in the comity of nations.
