AN ASSESSMENT OF THE CAUSES AND EFECTS OF YOUTH RESTIVENESS IN MINNA METROPOLIS, NIGER STATE

This study assessed the causes and effects of youth restiveness in Minna metropolis, Niger State. Data for the study were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The primary source comprises the used of questionnaire and interview, while the secondary source consists of text books, journals, thesis, manuals and other unpublished papers. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptivestatistical tools through the use of frequency, percentage and tables. Purposive and snowballing sampling techniques were used to select the required sample for the study. Findings of the study revealed that unemployment, poverty, substance abuse as well as activities of some unpatriotic politicians significantly contribute to the formation of violent gangs and their activities. Study also reveals that violent gang activities is associated with a number of unwanted consequences suchas vandalism, rape, arson, burglary, murder, robbery, ethno-religious militancy and kidnapping among others.The study recommends that, to reduce or solve the problem of youth restiveness a favorable government policy that will provide job opportunities, poverty reduction, education, skill acquisition, moral and value reorientation etc should be provided to guide the youth. In addition,counselling services should be made available to youths in schools and out of schools.
