EFFECT OF RURAL -URBAN MIGRATION ON RURAL AREAS: A CASE OF NORTH-EAST ZONE- NIGERIA

In recent years the rate of Rural – Urban migration has become alarmingand worrisome as more and more people continue to drift to Urban Centersfrom the Areas. It is against this backdrop that this paper adoptedsecondary data to examine the effects of rural urban migration in North –East of Nigeria. Data used was generated through the secondary sources inthe north east geopolitical zone. The findings of the study show that bothfemales and males migrate in the north east due to the activities of theinsurgency (Boko-Haram), Fulani herdsmen and other factors like non –availabilities of social amenities in rural areas. Furthermore, the studyrevealed that migration is affected by socio economic, demographic andcultural factors. The study paper therefore recommended that functionalsocial amenities such as electricity, pipe borne water and security should beprovided in the rural areas of north east.
