CONTENDING PARADIM OF DEVELOPMENT: DEVELOPMENT AS ECONOMIC GROWTH; DEVELOPMENT AS REDISTRIBUTION WITH GROWTH AND BASIC NEED MODEL OF DEVELOPMENT: A CRITIQUE

Abstract

This paper assesses three main theories of development – Development as Economic Growth; Development as Redistribution with Growth and Development as Provision of Basic Needs of Citizens. An X-ray of these theories shows that disconnect between application of the principles of the theories of development and their inability to transmit development to the citizenry. Content analysis was utilized to source for materials for the ability. The conclusion reveals that development cannot be imported; neither can it be engineered in isolation of the social, cultural, political and economic milieus of a particular environment. Development must be home grown with a symbiotic relationship between the governments as the citizens because the citizens are the direct beneficiaries of all governmental efforts.
