REVIEW OF NANA ASMA'U ON THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN SOKOTO CALIPHATE

Abstract

Over decades years ago women have been agitating for their rights and gender equality.
Women policy were insufficient to achieve their dreams of been equal to men. But on the
ground of adoption of the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination
against women (CEDAW), many girls and women still do not have equal opportunities
and rights recognized by law. Northern Nigeria is an example to this, which sokoto is not
an exceptional. This gives motive in this paper to examine why denier of women in
owning properties, inherits lands, inter-relationship etc. women were involve in social
exclusions, such as killings, female genitals mutilations, trafficking's, restricted mobility
and early marriages among others which has social and economic implication. The study
used content analysis as a method of data analysis with secondary sources of data. The
study discovered that until the society is able to fix the failure of worth of women in
recognitions and explorations for them to have equal access to health, information and
services, education, employments, and political positions among others, otherwise
women's right and privileges will continue to be agitated. The study concluded that until
there is drastic change for recognition of women's right, across all aspect of society. The
paper make Recommendations such as recognition of quotas system in all levels and
positions in order to enhance and recognised rights of women.
