PLS-SEM ANALYSIS ON EFFECTS OF DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND STRESS ON LECTURERS RESEARCH PERFORMANCE DURING COVID-19 LOCKDOWN IN NIGERIA

Abstract

COVID-19 has wrecked global but significant havoc and distress on virtually all aspect
of human endeavor ranging from social, political, economical to religious, cultural and
even family bound. Apart from the evident physical symptoms in infected cases, it has
caused serious damages to academic activities which by extension severely affected
lecturers' performance. Nigeria, like other countries, implemented a nationwide lockdown
to contain and curb the transmission of the virus. The study attempt to explore the effects
of depression, anxiety and stress on tertiary institutions lecturer's research performance
in north eastern Nigeria during the lockdown. In line with thatan online survey, measuring
depression, anxiety, and stress and research performance was administered using
Google forms. A total of 123 valid responses were received and consideredfor analysis.
Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling 3 was used in assessing the model. The
results revealed that anxiety cause by the lockdown has adversely affectedtertiary
institutions lecturers' research performance. Surprisingly no such kind of relationship was
found between depression and stress on lecturers research performance. Thus, the study
recommends precautionary measures to be taken in case of future lockdown that may
occur.
