Abstract

The objective of this paper is to examine the roles of small and medium enterprises
(SMEs) in the economic development of Kano state Nigeria. SMEs play significant roles
in sustaining socio economic development of many countries in the world through
employment generation, capacity building and uplifting the welfare of people through
provision of goods and services. However, their relevance to the economic growth is
decreasing due to high cost of business operation, unfavorable competition with foreign
made goods and high rate of corruption. Despite the government and other
Organisations initiatives in encouraging SMEs growth, yet the problem is persisting. The
paper proposes a given model that hopes to put into consideration by the decision makers
and SMEs owners to face the obstacles.
