ADOPTING COUNSELLING AS A TOOL TO COMBAT INSECURITY IN NIGERIA

Abstract

The world is confronted with severe threat as a fall-out of increasing insecurity and
violence .This paper discusses counseling as a tool to combat insecurity in Nigeria in other
to engendered national development and peaceful co-existence of the citizens. The
paper uses secondary data such as articles from reputable journals, books and content
analysis to deduce the role of counseling on Nigerian insecurity. The study reveals that
Nigeria has experienced menace of insecurity with negative consequences leading to
psychological trauma; consequently Counseling has been identified as a means of
mediation, reconciliation and arbitration to address the incidence of insecurity in
Nigeria. The paper recommends among others that the government should establish
counseling centre at strategic places to cater for all classes of people that need
counseling to promote national security and development.
