EFFECTS OF EDUCATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE ON BASIC EDUCATION IN KANO AND KATSINA STATES

Abstract

Basic education is the foundation and bedrock forthe development of any society. For this
reason, government in 2004 came out with UBE Act. The act provides the infrastructural
requirement for the attainment of basic education in Nigeria. For this to be achieved,
global communities and national governments spend a lot of resources. However,
empirical evidences and record showsthat there is inadequacy of educational
infrastructure to the extent that pupils are receiving lessons on the floor, classes are
dilapidated and schools inadequate. Pupils have to travel for miles before accessing the
schools in the two States. This paper is designed to assess the provision of infrastructure
and its effects on the attainment of basic education objectives in Kano and
KatsinaStates.The paper employed documentary research design. It relied on secondary
sources of data such as Annual School Census, World Development Reports, Education
for All Report, Annual Action Plans, National and International Surveys etc. Content
analysis was used for the presentation and analysis of data. It found a strong nexus
between provision of infrastructure and the attainment of educational objectives. It was
also found both Kano and Katsina States performed poorly in the provision of
educational infrastructure.The paper submitted that there should be more provision of
infrastructure like schools, classes, toilets, boreholes and recreational facilities as well as
furniture for both pupils and teachers and in offices.
