INTERNAL SUPERVISION: A TOOL FOR TEACHERS’ EFFECTIVENESS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS, NIGERIA

Abstract

It is an undisputable fact that Nigerian educational system in general and secondary schools in particular are faced with problem of supervisions and this has direct effect on its products. The study examines the concept and purpose of internal supervision, techniques of internal supervision, and makes of distinctions between supervision and inspection. Furthermore, concept of teachers’ effectiveness and challenges of international supervision were critically examined. The challenges include employment of unqualified and untrained persons for quality control, resulting in low-quality output and insufficiency of the resources and minimal amounts required for inspection among others. The study concludes that internal supervision enhances teachers' classroom instruction, their level of subject-matter expertise, and their professional growth as teachers. Therefore, it is suggested that the principal as internal supervisor should pay regular visit to the teachers when the teaching is ongoing and offer professional support and suggestions on how they can improve in their carrier.
