Evaluating the Effect of Brekete Family Reality Show on Domestic Conflict Resolution Amongst Families in FCT Abuja and Nasarawa State

Abstract

This study evaluated the role of the Brekete Family Reality Show, a Nigerian media platform, in resolving domestic conflicts in Abuja and Nasarawa State. Drawing on Agenda-Setting and Conflict Resolution theories, the research examines the programme's influence on audience attitudes, mediation effectiveness, and operational challenges. Using a mixed-methods approach—surveys (n=400) and interviews, the study findings reveal that 75% of respondents perceive the show as impactful, crediting its use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms for fostering peaceful resolutions. Yet challenges such as lack of follow-up (28.3%) and resistance to face-to-face dialogue (22%) hinder sustained success. The programme's accessibility, facilitated by Pidgin English broadcasts, enhances its reach among low-literacy populations. The study underscores media's potential as a non-traditional ADR tool in Nigeria.
