Awareness and Perceptions of Career Opportunities in Adult and Non-Formal Education among NCE Students in Kano State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined students' levels of awareness regarding adult education as a career choice in colleges of education for professional development in Kano State, Nigeria. Two research objectives and corresponding research questions guided the study. A survey research design was adopted, with a population of 1,242 students from three colleges of education in Kano State. Using a simple random sampling technique, 248 students from the Adult and Non-Formal Education Departments of three NCE-awarding institutions were selected. Data were collected using the researcher's developed questionnaire titled Awareness of Career Opportunities of NCE Students in Adult and Non-Formal Education (PCOSAAE). Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the research questions, including frequency counts, mean, and standard deviation. Findings revealed that NCE students in Kano State Colleges of Education have limited awareness of career opportunities in adult and non-formal education. However, they know the availability of courses and training programmes related to career development in the field. The study recommends implementing sensitisation programmes to enhance awareness of career opportunities in adult and non-formal education. It also suggests follow-up studies on graduates, particularly those who have successfully utilised their acquired skills in practical employment.
