Evaluation of Planning in the Management of Mass Literacy Programmes in Niger State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examines the administration of mass literacy programmes in Niger State, Nigeria. Six specific objectives were formulated in alignment with six research questions that guided the investigation. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the research, with six local government areas randomly selected for inclusion. The study population consisted of 794 facilitators and staff of NSAME, from which a sample size of 202 was drawn. The mean statistic was employed to analyse responses to the research questions. The findings indicated that all items had a mean score above 2.50, signifying agreement. This suggests, among other findings, that adequate planning measures are in place for the mass literacy programmes in Niger State. The study concludes that rosters for the supervision of study centres are prepared and displayed on appropriate noticeboards. Plans for unscheduled visits are devised, with rosters provided to relevant officers for execution in Niger State. Recommendations include ensuring adequate planning by the government at all levels to enhance mass literacy programmes in Niger State. Additionally, the study advocates for recruiting qualified and competent personnel to support achieving programme objectives in the state.
