Evolution of Female Education in the Hambali Family, Katsina: From Historical Roots to Contemporary Achievements

Abstract

This study explores the evolution of female education within the Hambali family in Katsina, from pre-colonial times to the present. It emphasizes the cultural and religious motivations behind the family's commitment to both Islamic and Western education for women. The study explores the initial reluctance and eventual acceptance of Western education during the colonial period. Adopting a historical methodology, the study utilizes primary sources such as interviews with family members, archival materials, and educational records. Secondary sources include relevant literature and previous studies on female education in Northern Nigeria. The study highlights significant milestones like the establishment of Katsina Girls Centre. The article chronicles the increasing educational achievements and professional contributions of Hambali women, reflecting a broader socio-cultural shift towards valuing female education in Northern Nigeria. The study argues that the Hambali family's dedication to female education serves as a model for other families in Katsina and beyond. It showcases the transformative impact of education on women's roles in society.
