Preservation of Local Cultural Heritage through Library Archives: Challenges and Strategies

Abstract

This study explores the challenges and strategies associated with preserving cultural heritage in Nigerian libraries, aiming to assess the effectiveness of current practices and propose enhancements. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing surveys and case studies of six libraries across Nigeria's geopolitical zones: National Library of Nigeria (Abuja), Lagos State Library (Lagos), Enugu State Library (Enugu), Kano State Library (Kano), Plateau State Library (Jos), and Rivers State Library (Port Harcourt). Data collection involved semi-structured interviews with librarians and archival staff, alongside direct observations of preservation practices. NVivo software was used for thematic analysis of the collected data, allowing for an in-depth exploration of recurring themes and patterns. Findings indicate that Nigerian libraries face significant challenges in preserving cultural heritage materials, including inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, lack of trained personnel, and environmental factors such as humidity and pests. Despite these obstacles, libraries have adopted various strategies to mitigate damage and enhance preservation, including digitization, climate control measures, and staff training programs. The study recommends that policymakers prioritize funding allocation for library preservation, libraries adopt advanced technological solutions for digitization and environmental control, and public awareness programs be established to garner community support and involvement. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to assess the long-term impact of preservation strategies and explore innovative methods for heritage conservation. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on library preservation and provides actionable insights for enhancing the preservation of Nigeria's rich cultural heritage.
