Students’ Attitude towards Artificial Intelligence (Ai) and the Influence of Media Representations

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become more and more interwoven in our social life as a result of worldwide advancements in information and communication technologies. Because of this, it is now essential for the people of academics, research institutions, ICT experts and other stakeholders in government and NGOs to comprehend how the public feels about AI in order to direct the advancement, application, and the use of the technology. This study assessed students' perceptions on the impact of media depictions and attitudes towards artificial intelligence.  A cross-sectional survey was used with a sample of 391. The findings of the study showed that while most students are aware of the application of AI, there are differences in their opinions on the usage of the technology. Additionally, it was found that the majority of respondents had optimistic expectations for the future of AI. Equally, it was out found that students' attitudes, opinions, perceptions, beliefs, and understanding of AI and modern technology in general are influenced by how AI is represented and portrayed by the media, underscoring the media's function as a lens through which to observe social reality Considering the facts that Modern technology is currently a vital variable for the development of any nation in this digital age. The study therefore, recommends that Nigerian government adopt a similar approach and increase the weight placed on AI when formulating policies to encourage different forms of AI research, development, application, and regulation.
